Workplace bullying is a global issue

Believe it or not, workplace bullying is a global issue and it is not isolated to a particular country or company. Unfortunately, workplace violence has reached epidemic levels in some countries and bullies in the workplace is a growing problem. Bullies can be identified by the behavior they exhibit in the workplace. They torment and intimidate their fellow colleagues and many employers do not know how to effectively deal with the situation or how to deter it. Bullying involves the misuse of power, insults, overbearing supervision, spreading of malicious rumors, power-plays, criticism and undermining colleagues by overloading them with paperwork and job tasks. Does your employer currently have anti-bullying policies in the workplace? Does your employer offer anti-bullying courses and training? Often there is a clear gap between the incidents of bullying and what the managers say they do to deal with bullying. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to bullying that will be effective in every company, but the organizational culture and management team should make it explicitly clear that bullying is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Also, it is essential to contact top management regarding these incidents in an effort to protect staff, productivity and work performance levels. If you are a victim of workplace bullying, contact your manager or workplace relations specialist to address the issue. PM
