Tell me about yourself
What is one of the first questions you will hear at a job interview? Typically, the hiring official or panel will ask you, 'please tell me something about yourself.' Because of nervousness or lack of experience with job interviews, people will often take that opportunity to share information about their spouse, children, home, pets, etc. That is not the reason for the question. The question is being asked, because the hiring official or panel wants to know what it is about you that will offer something beneficial to the job for which you are applying. This is a prime opportunity for the interviewee to share information about themselves such as their outstanding job skills, boast about their work which has garnered outstanding results, how they have increased profits or benefitted their employers with new and innovative ideas.
In summary, the interviewer wants you to share information that will convince him/her that you are the best candidate for the job. This is your time to Sell! Sell! Sell! So start convincing them that you are the right choice by sharing information relative to your professional job experience and not about your personal life. They will learn all that they need to know about you after you are hired. Good luck! PM
